Medium Najeon Chilgi Mother of Pearl Folding Screen — Pine

Overview

This Medium Najeon Chilgi mother-of-pearl folding screen (byeongpung) features the Pine (소나무 (sonamu)) motif, a Korean symbol of resilience and long life. Hand-inlaid iridescent shell is set into deep Korean lacquer, so the design shifts in color as the light moves. A folding screen brings a focal point of artistry to a living room, entryway, or study, and can be partly folded to stand freely on a console or floor.

Heritage & Craft

The pine is a cornerstone of Korean symbolism: keeping its green through snow and cold, it represents integrity, resilience, and an unbroken life. In najeon-chilgi the gnarled trunk and needled boughs are built up from slivers of iridescent shell, giving the evergreen a quiet, luminous presence on the dark lacquer.
