The mandarin duck (원앙, wonang) is Korea's emblem of conjugal harmony: the birds are said to keep one mate, so a carved pair is given to newlyweds as a wish for a devoted marriage. The bird presented in the traditional jeonan-rye wedding rite is the wild goose (기러기, gireogi) — a related but separate custom. Each piece is carved and hand-painted, so grain and brushwork vary from one to the next.
