Hand-Carved Wood Sculpture - Family (Large) by Kim Dong-heon

Overview

A large hand-carved wood sculpture on the theme of family: tall robed figures gathered close, with smaller figures ranged along the base, mounted on a dark plinth. The forms are pared back to silhouette, so the piece reads as a single mass from a distance and resolves into individual figures up close.

Craft

Carved from solid wood and hand-finished, with the grain and tool marks left visible and a graduated stain running from pale at the top to dark at the foot. Because each piece is worked by hand, proportions and colouring vary slightly from one example to the next.

Artist

Attributed to Kim Dong-heon, a Korean wood-carving artisan. As a handmade work, each piece is effectively one of a kind.
