Overview

A pen case faced in Korean hand embroidery (sonjasu) on a pink ground. Needlework, not lacquerware — the pattern is stitched in silk thread rather than inlaid in shell.

Heritage & Craft

Korean embroidery builds its images entirely from directional stitching: colour is graded by changing thread rather than by dyeing the cloth, so the motif reads differently depending on where the light falls. The finished panel is mounted over a firm case sized for pens and brushes.
