Hanji Mother of Pearl Butterfly Saju Wedding Box Najeon (Purple) Jewelry Box Yedan Wedding Gift Box

Overview

The purple version of the hanji-bodied najeon saju box, with the same butterfly inlay set into a lacquered mulberry-paper shell. Purple is the less traditional of the two finishes and tends to be chosen when the box will live on a dressing table rather than be put away after the wedding. Against it the shell reads violet-tinged rather than silver.

Heritage & Craft

Colored ottchil is made by working pigment into the refined sap before it is applied, and purple is among the harder shades to hold — it deepens as the lacquer cures, so the maker is judging a color that has not fully arrived yet. Over that ground the butterflies are cut, seated, buried, and polished back in the ordinary najeon sequence.

The butterfly's link to marriage in Korea comes from how it is depicted rather than what it is: almost never alone, usually in flight, usually circling a flower. On a wedding box the reading is a household in motion and doing well.

Gifting

An engagement, wedding, or bridal-party gift for occasions where a black lacquer box would feel too formal. Also a good choice for a younger recipient who will use it daily rather than store it.
