Overview

This Peony Mother of Pearl Vanity Jewelry Box is a Korean mother-of-pearl box in the form of a vanity jewelry box. Its lid is worked with a peony design in hand-inlaid nacre.

Heritage & Craft

The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, long chosen to wish a household prosperity and standing. In najeonchilgi, slivers of natural shell are cut and set into the lacquer by hand, so the design shifts color as the light moves.

Artist

Made by Kim Gil-su as noted by the workshop.
