Premium Najeonchilgi Peony Blue Shell Inlay Mother of Pearl Jewelry Box, 30 cm by Park In-ho

Overview

A Korean najeonchilgi jewelry box, 30 × 19 × 13.5 cm, covered on every side in hand-inlaid mother-of-pearl peonies set against a deep blue nacre ground. The gently domed lid opens to a mirror and a velvet-lined interior with ring rolls and an open compartment.

Heritage & Craft

The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, long chosen to wish a household prosperity. In najeonchilgi, slivers of natural shell are cut and set into lacquer by hand, so the surface shifts color as the light moves.

Artist
