Overview

A rectangular lidded jewelry box in the Joseon style, its lid inlaid with peonies, blossoms and butterflies in natural mother-of-pearl inside a fine nacre border, with a red velvet interior and ring roll. Attributed to Oh Myung-ho.

Heritage & Craft

The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, and the butterflies that settle among the blossoms are read as joy — a pairing chosen for pieces meant to be given. Every petal and wing is an individually cut piece of natural shell set into the lacquer by hand, and the banded border is laid in separately, sliver by sliver.

The Artisan — Oh Myung-ho

This piece is attributed to Oh Myung-ho. As with all hand-inlaid work, each box is individual.
