Overview

A single-tier rectangular lidded jewelry box in the Joseon style, its lid set with blossoms and butterflies in mother-of-pearl inside a fine nacre border. Attributed to Oh Myung-ho.

Heritage & Craft

Butterflies among blossoms are read in Korean decoration as joy and affection. Every wing and petal is an individually cut piece of natural nacre set into lacquer, then polished flush; the banded border is laid in separately, sliver by sliver.

Artist

Attributed to Oh Myung-ho. Hand-finished, so each example is subtly individual.
