Blue Peacock - Hanji Turtle Jewelry Box

Overview

A rectangular lidded jewelry box with a blue hanji-finished lid, set with a long-tailed bird on a flowering branch in hand-inlaid natural mother-of-pearl over a black lacquered body.

Heritage & Craft

Hanji, Korea's mulberry-bark paper, has been layered and finished into household objects for centuries; here it gives the lid a deep, marbled blue found in few other Korean crafts. The bird and blossoms are natural shell, cut by hand and set into the surface so the plumage catches the light from every angle.
