Overview

A medium double-lidded jewelry box in red lacquer with butterflies set in an octagonal composition of hand-inlaid mother-of-pearl, attributed to Oh Myung-ho.

Heritage & Craft

The eight-sided frame is an auspicious device in Korean decoration, and filling it with butterflies — emblems of joy and love — doubles the good wishes. Against the warm red ground the hand-cut nacre wings glow nearly golden; the double lid opens to a tray over a deeper well.

Artist

Attributed to Oh Myung-ho. Hand-finished, each example subtly individual — effectively one of a kind.
