Overview

This Sun, Moon & Five Peaks jewelry box is a double-lidded mother-of-pearl case whose lid recreates Korea's most regal landscape — sun, moon, and five mountain peaks — paired with a phoenix, all hand-inlaid in natural nacre.

Heritage & Craft

The Sun, Moon and Five Peaks (Irwol-obongdo) was the painted screen that stood behind the Joseon king's throne, an emblem of the sovereign and of cosmic order. Joined here with the phoenix (bonghwang), the messenger of peace and noble virtue, the design carries a wish for harmony and dignity. The motif is cut piece by piece from natural shell and set into lacquer by hand.
