Overview

This premium arabesque octagonal multi-purpose box by Jang Tae-bok is wrapped in a scrolling arabesque vine of hand-inlaid mother-of-pearl around an eight-sided body — a catch-all for jewelry, desk small-wares, or keepsakes.

Heritage & Craft

The flowering arabesque (dangcho) has run across Korean lacquerware since the Goryeo era, its unbroken vine a wish for continuity and flourishing fortune. The octagon (palgak) is itself an auspicious form. Jang Tae-bok works in the exacting kkeun-eum tradition, in which fine strips of nacre are cut and laid one by one.

The work of Jang Tae-bok. Assembled strip by strip by hand, so no two boxes are identical — effectively one of a kind.
