Overview
This Peony Octagonal Candy Bowl Red is a Korean mother-of-pearl bowl in the form of an octagonal lidded candy/treat bowl with a lifting knob. Its surface is worked with a peony design in hand-inlaid nacre.
Heritage & Craft
The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, long chosen to wish a household prosperity and standing. In najeonchilgi, slivers of natural shell are cut and set into the lacquer by hand, so the design shifts color as the light moves. The lidded octagonal form recalls traditional Korean covered vessels used to serve sweets to guests.
Artist
