Overview
A small keepsake and jewelry box faced in Korean hand embroidery (sonjasu), worked in a chaekgeori scholar's-shelf composition. This is needlework, not lacquerware — the pattern is stitched in silk thread, not inlaid in shell.
Heritage & Craft
Chaekgeori — "books and things" — was a Joseon still-life genre showing stacked books, brushes and scholarly objects, painted for studies and, later, embroidered onto household pieces. Each panel here is embroidered by hand and mounted over a rigid frame, so the stitch direction catches light across the motif.
Specifications
- Material: Hand-embroidered silk thread on textile, mounted over a rigid frame
- Motif: Chaekgeori (scholar's shelf still life)
- Form: Small lidded jewelry and keepsake box
- Note: Contains no mother-of-pearl inlay and no ottchil lacquer
- Origin: Handmade in South Korea
Care
Keep dry. Dust with a soft brush; do not wash or wet-wipe the embroidered panels. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which fades silk thread.
Gifting
A traditional Korean yedan wedding gift, and a good present for anyone drawn to textile craft rather than lacquerware.
