Masterpiece Najeon Gold-Trimmed Mother of Pearl Tray Najeonchilgi Ornament

Overview

A decorative mother-of-pearl tray finished with a gold-toned rim — the metal edge frames the inlay the way a mount frames a print, and stops the eye from running off the side. The Korean listing files it under jangsikpum, ornament, rather than tableware, which tells you how it is meant to live.

The nacre field shifts between blue, green and pink depending on where you stand, so the piece changes character across a day of moving light.

Heritage & Craft

Lacquer and shell are natural opposites: one is a dark resin that hardens by absorbing humidity, the other a brittle mineral sheet. Najeon work reconciles them by embedding the shell early and then sanding the built-up lacquer down to meet it, so the two finish level and move together as the wood expands.

Gold trim is a later refinement borrowed from Korean metal-and-lacquer furniture fittings. It marks a piece as presentation-grade rather than domestic, which is why gold-rimmed trays turn up as official gifts far more often than in ordinary households.
