Overview

The largest format in this group: a 24 cm chest built in three stacking tiers, so rings, chains and larger bracelets each get their own level instead of tangling in one cavity. The inlay uses yagwang shell — the luminous green turban shell prized in Korean workshops for its unusually strong colour flash. It was made in the yedan tradition, as a bride's trousseau chest, which is why the proportions are generous rather than dainty.

Heritage & Craft

Yagwang-pae is graded and split by hand; the best sheets show a peacock shimmer that ordinary abalone does not. Laying it over three separate tiers means the pattern has to register across the joints, so the design is planned on the assembled chest and only then cut apart, inlaid, lacquered and polished tier by tier.

Yedan is the set of gifts a bride's family sends to the groom's household before a Korean wedding. A lacquered chest was the traditional vessel for it, and the object outlived the occasion — kept for decades afterwards as the household's good box. That is the register this piece is pitched at: something handed on, not used up.
