Overview

Plum branches in flower, cut from tinted shell and set across the lid of a 21 cm box with softly rolled edges. Where peony designs fill the whole surface, this one leaves generous empty lacquer around the branch — a deliberately sparse composition borrowed from ink painting. The blossoms read almost white against the dark ground and change tone depending on where you stand.

Heritage & Craft

Shell for najeonchilgi is split down to a fraction of a millimetre before it can be cut, thin enough to flex without shattering. On a piece like this the artisan works branch first, then adds each blossom separately, so the drawing keeps the irregular rhythm of a real tree instead of a repeated stamp.

Maehwa, the plum, opens while snow is still on the ground and is the first of the Four Gentlemen to bloom each year. Korean scholars took it as the emblem of someone who holds their principles through hard seasons, and it became a favourite for study rooms and for gifts marking a fresh start.
