Premium Najeonchilgi Pine & Crane Mother of Pearl Jewelry Box (Red) Yedan Wedding Gift Box, 24 cm (Master Artisan Jang Tae-bok)

Overview

A red-lacquer jewelry box of about 24 cm — eight chi in the traditional Korean measure the source listing uses — carrying a songhak composition: cranes among pine, with flowering elements worked into the same scene. Red ground rather than the usual black, which is the older palette for bridal furniture.

Inside it is a single deep compartment for accessories; outside, the crane's outstretched form is the piece's whole visual argument.

Heritage & Craft

Rendering a crane in shell is a test of edge control. The bird's silhouette is largely negative space — a thin neck, thinner legs — so the artisan cuts long slender pieces that would snap if handled carelessly, sets them into the red lacquer, and then polishes the built-up surface back without lifting them.

Pine and crane appear together throughout Korean art as two of the Ten Symbols of Longevity: the tree that stays green all winter, the bird believed to live for centuries. Paired, they are a straightforward wish for a long life — which is exactly what a bride's family means to send with a trousseau box.

Artist

Attributed in the Korean source to Jang Tae-bok, a najeon artisan working in traditional shell inlay.

The longevity reading and the red ground point this squarely at milestone birthdays for older family members and at wedding gifting. The Korean listing also markets it as a present for overseas recipients, and the motif does translate without a footnote.
