Overview

This is the premium grade of the rounded peony box: same 24 cm gullim silhouette, but a denser inlay field and a heavier lacquer build than the standard line. The bugwi-mokdan peony climbs from the sidewall over the lid rather than sitting isolated on top.

In Korea it is sold as a yedan-ham — the box a bride's family sends with the wedding trousseau — and it is sized for exactly that: earrings, rings and a folded strand or two, all in one lidded interior.

Heritage & Craft

The work is additive and slow. A wooden core is sealed, shell is cut and laid, then the whole surface is buried under repeated lacquer coats and abraded back until only the inlay shows through. Nothing is glued on top of a finished box; the pattern lives inside the lacquer film.

Peonies carry a specific promise in Korean decorative language — abundance and an honourable household — which is why they dominate wedding furniture and trousseau goods rather than, say, scholarly bamboo or plum.
