Overview

A 30 cm jewelry box with softly rounded corners and a domed lid, its whole surface given over to a peony scroll cut from natural shell. A curved body is far harder to lacquer than a square one — every coat has to be worked around the radius — which is why the rounded form is reserved for better pieces. The interior is finished to hold rings, bracelets, and larger costume pieces.

Heritage & Craft

Work on a piece like this begins long before any shell appears. A wooden carcass is sealed, cloth-wrapped, and given repeated coats of ottchil, the sap of the Korean lacquer tree, each one hardened in a humid cabinet before the next goes on. Only then are the peony petals — cut from abalone and trimmed with a fine saw — positioned and buried under further lacquer, to be polished back until they surface.

The peony is known in Korea as the flower of wealth and rank. On a bridal box it is a plain wish for a prosperous household, which is why peony boxes have been standard in Korean yedan wedding gift exchanges for generations.
