Wooden Folk-Painting Tiger Ornament

Overview

A hand-finished wooden ornament painted in the bold, good-humored style of Korean folk art (minhwa), featuring the tiger — the most beloved figure in the Korean decorative tradition. Far from fearsome, this tiger wears the slightly comical, wide-eyed expression that minhwa painters favored, making it a warm, characterful accent for a shelf, desk, or entryway.

Heritage & Craft

In Korea the tiger (호랑이, horangi) is a guardian spirit believed to drive away misfortune and evil, which is why folk painters placed it at the threshold of the home. The classic pairing of magpie and tiger (kkachi-horangi) delivered a New Year's wish for good news and protection. Each piece is carved and hand-painted, so brushwork and grain vary slightly from one to the next.
