Overview

This extra-large peacock bandaji chest jewelry box by Jang Tae-bok takes the form of a traditional Korean drop-front chest, in black with red, its peacock spread in hand-inlaid mother-of-pearl.

Heritage & Craft

The peacock signifies nobility, beauty, and good fortune, its plumage a natural match for the iridescence of nacre. The bandaji is Korea's classic blanket-and-clothing chest with a hinged drop-front; Jang Tae-bok works the surface in the exacting kkeun-eum cut-strip technique.

Artist

The work of Jang Tae-bok. Assembled strip by strip by hand, so no two pieces are identical — effectively one of a kind.
