Peony Blue Mother of Pearl Box by Park In-ho

Overview

A blue-lacquered najeonchilgi jewelry box that breaks from the traditional black palette: deep cobalt ground scattered with hand-inlaid peony blossoms in natural mother-of-pearl. Attributed to artisan Park In-ho, it is sized for everyday rings, earrings, and small keepsakes while reading as a decorative object on a vanity or shelf.

Heritage & Craft

Najeonchilgi is the Korean art of setting iridescent nacre into layered lacquer. The peony (moran) has long signified honor and abundance in Korean decorative art, which is why it recurs on pieces meant to mark weddings and milestones. Each shell fragment here is cut, fitted, and polished by hand, then sealed under successive coats of lacquer.

The Artisan — Park In-ho

This piece is the work of Park In-ho, who specializes in colored-lacquer najeon. Because every blossom is inlaid by hand, slight variations in shell placement make each box one of a kind.
