Music Box Melody Hanji Base Mother of Pearl Jewelry Box - Oh Myung-ho

Overview

A mother-of-pearl jewelry box with a built-in wind-up music movement and a hanji (Korean mulberry-paper) base. Lift the lid and a melody plays — a tactile, sentimental turn on the classic najeonchilgi box. Attributed to artisan Oh Myung-ho.

Heritage & Craft

The box brings together two Korean traditions: najeonchilgi mother-of-pearl inlay on the exterior, and hanji — handmade paper from the mulberry tree — lining the base. Each shell motif is inlaid by hand and sealed in lacquer, while the music movement adds a keepsake quality the recipient returns to.

The Artisan — Oh Myung-ho

This piece is attributed to Oh Myung-ho. As with all hand-inlaid work, small variations make each box individual.
