Purple Plum Blossom - Hanji Turtle Jewelry Box

Overview

A rectangular lidded jewelry box with a purple hanji-finished lid, set with a flowering branch and butterflies in hand-inlaid natural mother-of-pearl over a black lacquered body.

Heritage & Craft

Hanji, Korea's mulberry-bark paper, is layered and finished to give the lid its deep, slightly marbled colour — purple was historically a prized and costly dye. The inlay itself is natural shell: each petal and wing is cut by hand and set into the surface, so the design shifts colour as the light moves. The plum blossom (maehwa) flowers in late-winter snow, making it Korea's emblem of resilience and quiet hope.
