A rectangular lidded najeonchilgi jewelry box in high-gloss lacquer, its lid set with a pair of long-tailed birds on a flowering branch in natural mother-of-pearl.

Heritage & Craft

The flower-and-bird garden — hwajodo — is one of the oldest subjects in Korean decorative art, with paired birds standing for harmony and the blossoms for abundance. The shell is cut sliver by sliver, set into the lacquer and polished back flush, so the plumage catches the light from every angle.
