Overview

A rectangular lidded najeonchilgi jewelry box in high-gloss black lacquer, its lid worked with a full peony spray and butterflies in hand-inlaid natural mother-of-pearl.

Heritage & Craft

The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, long chosen to wish a household prosperity and standing; the butterflies that settle around it are read as joy. In najeonchilgi, slivers of natural shell are cut and set into the lacquer by hand, then polished flush through repeated coats, so the design shifts colour as the light moves across it.
