Peony Crane & Pine Nine-Compartment Box - by Park In-ho

Overview

This Peony Crane & Pine Nine-Compartment Box is a Korean mother-of-pearl box in the form of a tray box divided into nine compartments. Its lid is worked with a peony, crane & pine design in hand-inlaid nacre.

Heritage & Craft

The peony (moran) is Korea's flower of wealth and honor, long chosen to wish a household prosperity and standing. Crane and pine (hak and sonamu) are Korea's enduring pairing for long life and steadfast character. In najeonchilgi, slivers of natural shell are cut and set into the lacquer by hand, so the design shifts color as the light moves.
