TurtleLine Mother of Pearl Hexagon Multi-Purpose Box

Overview

A six-sided multi-purpose lidded box faced edge to edge in natural mother-of-pearl, its lid worked with a pair of dragons among clouds and finished with a cast metal clasp in the form of a geobukseon, the Korean turtle ship.

Heritage & Craft

Paired dragons among clouds are among the most demanding subjects in najeonchilgi: the scales are laid in as individual slivers of shell, and the cloud scrolls are cut as continuous ribbons. The six-sided form is a favourite in Korean craft for the way it gives the inlay a new facet from every angle. Every panel, including the sides, is inlaid rather than printed.
