Overview

A 24 cm rounded-edge lidded box whose peony is deliberately lavish — the Korean description calls it hwaryeohan mokdan, an ornate peony — with layered petals opening across the whole lid rather than a single tidy bloom in the centre. The rounded gullim profile means the lacquer runs continuously over the corners, giving the box a pebble-smooth feel in the hand. Mid-sized: roomier than a ring box, still light enough to move from dresser to drawer.

Heritage & Craft

A many-petalled flower is one of the more demanding subjects in nacre. Each petal is a separate piece of shell, cut so that its natural banding runs the way the petal curves, and the artisan chooses fragments with contrasting iridescence for the outer and inner layers so the bloom appears to have depth on a flat surface. Once every piece is seated, the lid disappears under coats of Korean lacquer and is then hand-polished back down until the flower re-emerges, sealed and level.

The peony is the flower Koreans call the king of flowers, and its meaning is wealth, honour and standing rather than romance. Peony screens were used at royal ceremonies and the motif was worked into bridal robes and wedding furnishings — a wish for a prosperous, well-regarded life, which is why it remains the most requested pattern in najeonchilgi jewelry boxes.
