Overview

Shell-inlaid sunflowers on a red lacquer field — the boldest of the three colourways in this frame series, and the one that reads from across a room. Red lacquer is unforgiving of flaws, so the nacre has to be seated cleanly and levelled precisely; the reward is a hard, glassy surface that makes the shell look wet. It arrives finished and ready to hang, with no glass or backing to insert.

Heritage & Craft

The lacquer used here is ottchil, tapped as sap from the Korean lacquer tree and cured by humidity rather than heat. Coat after coat is brushed on and left to harden, with the inlaid shell buried and then abraded back until it breaks the surface again. The finish that results is not a varnish sitting on top of the wood but a dense skin fused to it — which is why antique najeonchilgi survives centuries with its shine intact.

Sunflowers carry a straightforwardly optimistic reading in Korean interiors: the seed-packed head is taken as abundance, and the flower's habit of tracking the sun as steady, unwavering fortune. Against red — the colour used for celebration and for warding off misfortune — the combination is deliberately auspicious.
