Najeonchilgi Sunflower Wall Mounted Mother of Pearl Frame (Green)

Overview

A wall-mounted Korean lacquer frame with a sunflower composition worked entirely in mother-of-pearl, set against a deep green lacquer ground. Unlike a photo frame, the panel itself is the artwork — the inlay is the picture. Hung in an entryway, study, or living room, the nacre catches ambient light and shifts colour as you move past it.

Heritage & Craft

Najeonchilgi is the Korean practice of embedding cut abalone and conch shell into layered ottchil lacquer. Each petal here is cut from natural shell by hand, seated into the lacquer ground, then buried under successive coats that are polished back until the shell surfaces flush with the finish — a process measured in weeks, not hours.

The sunflower is a comparatively modern motif in Korean craft, adopted for its association with prosperity and steady good fortune, which is why sunflower panels are a common housewarming and business-opening gift in Korea.
