Overview
A 27 cm lidded box with softened, rounded edges — gullim in Korean cabinetmaking — so there are no sharp corners to chip and the lacquer flows unbroken around the form. The lid carries a single large shell disc set above a stand of pine with cranes, a composition that fills the surface rather than sitting as a small central medallion. Its Korean name, dal-songhak, reads that disc as a moon; the workshop's own literature elsewhere describes it as a sun. Both readings belong to the same family of Korean sky-and-longevity scenes, and the piece is handsome either way. It is scaled for real use: deep enough for stacked bracelets, brooches and a watch, not just a ring or two.
Heritage & Craft
Two inlay disciplines meet on a box like this. Broad shapes — the disc, the birds' bodies, the pine boughs — are fretsawn from sheet nacre in the technique known as jureumjil, while the needles, feather lines and fine outlines are laid in as hair-thin shell filaments, a method called kkeuneumjil. Both are then sealed under successive layers of lacquer and polished flat, so the picture is inside the surface, not on it.
Pine and crane, songhak, is one of the most enduring pairings in Korean decorative art: both belong to the Ten Symbols of Longevity, the pine for staying green through winter and the crane for the long life folklore assigns it. Set beneath a sky disc, the scene shifts from emblem to landscape — which is why the combination has long been chosen for pieces meant to mark a beginning, including the yedanham boxes exchanged when a Korean couple marry.

Gifting
The traditional Korean use is as a wedding trousseau box, given to a bride or between the two families — but the longevity reading makes it equally fitting for a 60th or 70th birthday, a golden anniversary, or a retirement. At this size it also works as a mother-of-the-bride gift that will actually be used daily afterwards.
